Questions about Kailmeyra- #6 What is a Urisk anyway?

As you know, in light of the Release of The Heart of the Ancients coming out on November 11th, I'm answering questions I've gotten over the past year about the Kailmeyra series.

Today's question deals with some of my favorite characters: Rune and the Urisk.
Picture taken from Mystical Mythology site

While the Alfar and Dokkaflar are rooted in Norse mythology, Urisk come from Scotland. Some folklore call the Urisk faeries, others deem them elves. They are described as having the upper body of a man, the lower body of a goat. Some stories tell of feathers along their head and back, others talk of horns on their heads.  They dwell in caves and love the water of the Scottish Highlands. They long for human companionship, but, unfortunately, humans are scared of their appearance and often run away, which forces a Urisk into a lonely existence of solitude.

The Kailmeyra Urisk hold quite a few traits of the traditions of Scottish folklore. They love water, prefer to live in caves, and long for companionship.

Expression through art is extremely important to the Alfar. And so it only made sense to me that the Urisk (another race of elves) would have the same passion. Instead of art though, they love music.

The Kailmeyra Urisk are the same gray color as they mountain (because symbolically mountains represent solitude and the dwelling of God). Their personality is blunt and a bit crass. They don't mince words, but they are fiercely loyal to those they care about. They are also extremely powerful and rely heavily on each other, especially in times of war.

When Rune first popped in my head, I wanted him to have a true Scottish brogue. But after writing a few pages of dialogue, I decided it was too difficult to read. Allowing Rune's voice to carry a distinct quality while not frustrating the reader was difficult. However, once he started developing in my mind, his speech patterns became a gentle rhythm that translated well on the page.

In The Heart of the Ancients, the Urisk play a huge roll in the story. We get a glimpse into their culture and they soon became some of my favorite characters to write.

Questions about Kailmeyra #8

In celebration of The Heart of the Ancients coming out on November the 11th, I'm keeping with our little tradition and doing a post a day of the top questions readers have about the series.

Do Kate and Hol make an appearance in
The Heart of the Ancients?

For those that don't know, Kate and Hol were two of Nora's friends in the first book.

BTW** The pic is actually Scarlett Johansson Vicky Christina Barcelona. I got it here.

To be honest, Asteria was my first published work, and I made the rookie mistake of introducing characters in the first chapter that played a minor role in the story. I didn't learn until later that this was a bad idea. Too, I wasn't expecting these characters to resonate so strongly with the readers.

After numerous requests to bring Kate and Hol back, I did play with the idea for a while. But so much needed to take place in the third book, I was afraid bringing them back might weaken the storyline. That, combined with the fact that time works differently in Kailmeyra than it does on Earth, made it almost impossible. How could I possibly satisfy the reader's curiosity by giving Kate and Hol's backstory while introducing new characters that were integral to the plot?

And so we decided to leave Kate and Hol where they were. I have played with the idea of creating a contemporary NA about their time at college. If the readers want it, I may just do that. :-)

Don't forget, I'm giving away a $25 gift card and a signed complete set of the series. Just fill out the Rafflecopter below!

Fun at the KRA Luncheon

The KRA decorated each table according to the author's books
and subject. What a cute idea!
A few months back, I was invited to attend the Kentucky Reading Association's Author Luncheon. For my friends that aren't privileged to live in this great state, KRA's mission is to "... be a voice for literacy throughout the Commonwealth."

As a teacher, I so admire the work of this association. Kentucky is a diverse state to say the least. Our farm communities struggle to educate many of our second language learners, the mountainous regions struggle with generational poverty, and the larger cities bring their own urban set of challenges. And so, it's exciting to have a conference where teachers come from every corner of the state to talk about the advances in literacy education.

As a writer, I always look forward to meeting fellow authors and readers. What made this event great was the fact that the teachers attending the luncheon had a real passion for being in the classroom. What a wonderful opportunity to talk about my two favorite subjects: writing and education.

I'd like to thank Angie Madden, Kentucky Reading Association Author/Illustrator Luncheon Co-Chair, for all her hard work. I've rarely seen an event run with such precision and professionalism. Also, a special thank you to Joseph Beth Booksellers for bringing books to the event. I love Joseph-Beth's unwavering loyalty to the community. It's one of the many reasons I'll go twenty minutes out of my way to buy a book from them instead of going to a major chain just across the street.

One of the teachers at my table asked if I would like to quit teaching and write full-time. I explained that, while I would love to have more time to write, I'll never stop teaching. Writing is my passion, but teaching is my calling.

Today I was reminded I'm blessed to have both.

Question of the Day--What's up with the Jeweled eyes?

OH MY GOSH!!!!

Now that I'm done freaking out, today's FAQ is the most asked question of the year. And it's the most complicated to answer, but I'll try to keep it as succinct as possible.

FAQ--Why do the Alfar have jewel-toned eyes?

First of all, trying to create a different race of people is just as difficult as creating a new land, but the same principles apply. Readers have to have an anchor, something that helps tie fantasy to reality. The trait must be distinguishable but not get in the way of the storyline.

The difference between human and Alfar eyes is explained in The Secret of the Keepers, and so today I'll concentrate on why the characters were given their specific eye colors. As with everything, there is significance in the choices made.

Gavin--I researched personality traits of eyes and discovered that people with green eyes yearn for lasting relationships. They are extremely passionate and long for the touch of another. Symbolically though, Emeralds in the Bible reference the glories of God, flourishing, essence of life, growth, and prosperity. Sounds like Gavin, doesn't it? :- )

Nora--In the beginning of the book, Nora's eyes are hazel. They actually are fashioned after Kate's (my daughter) eyes. It made perfect sense to me that people with hazel eyes are known to be beauties. They have unusual relationships, and are masters of diversity. They also jump in when trying new things, and they rarely say no to a challenge. After the golden lake changes Nora's eyes to light brown topaz, symbolism takes over. Biblically the topaz family represents beauty, worthiness, and honor.

Malachi--Obviously there are no personality traits that I could research on diamond eyes, but Malachi came into my head that way and so that's what I went with. Symbolically, however, diamonds represent stability, brilliancy, virtuous, and right standing with God.

Rena--The personality traits for brown eyes are: attractive, adorable, and love to make new friends. Brown eyed people will do anything for someone they care about. Kind and polite, they can make anyone laugh or cheer them up. You can read more about Rena here.

Tark---Tark's a lot like Malachi in that no one has Lapis stone colored eyes. Symbolically though, Lapis is known best for its healing powers and bringing a sense of peace. It is said to have calming effects and was a gem for the kings of Egypt. It also is known to protect the wearer from emotional harm. I liked the fact that Lapis protects. Just seemed right that Rena's mate would have Lapis eyes.

Elias-- Ah, my man, Elias. He had have to have Sapphire eyes. People with blue eyes are intense, they love long lasting relationships, and they are kind. Symbolically, sapphires are mentioned several times in the bible, from Exodus in the old testament all the way to the book of Revelations. In most of these passages, sapphires represents guarding or protecting in someway. Aaron's breastplate and the new Jeruseleum wall in Revelations both have Sapphires in them. But what I really love is that Sapphires represent foundational truth.

Elaine--Jade has been used for thousands of years in ancient Egypt and by the mayans. It is said to have a connection to the divine and the eternal, but what I love about Jade is it is a stone that brings balance. Between Elias' intensity and Gavin's passion, Elaine does just that, doesn't she?

Queen Lera--light purple in Lera's opal eyes was an obvious reference to royalty. The reason for the opal is the fact that it's my mother's favorite gemstone, and it seemed appropriate being that my Great grandmother's name was Lera. Thought I'd keep it in the fam. :-D As to the symbolism, opals are known for their ability to help the wearer see both sides of an issue. They help bring balance when giving and receiving.

This will the be last "behind the scene" post until the third book gets ready to go live. In a little under 48 hours I'll be starting a new frequently asked question pile, so keep the questions coming!

Teaser Tuesday: The Secret of the Keepers

Twelve days! The Secret of the Keepers is being released in under two weeks!Click on the pic to get the synopsis.

Here's the first page! :-)

Amethyst moonlight angled through the trees revealing a small frame standing in the road. The woman’s shoulders slumped with age; her wild, white hair fell to her waist in a thick, tangled mess. She leaned on a twisted cane, keeping her head bowed.
Gavin’s anger stirred. Even though it had been well over a year since I discovered that I could feel his emotions, sometimes they took my breath away.
“What’s wrong?” I reached for his hand and then brought it to my lap. My voice never made it past the slowing cadence of horse hooves, but the woman’s head tilted as if she’d heard me.  Gavin’s features became chiseled.
“It appears we have a complication.” He glared at the woman as the carriage rolled to a stop.
The forest grew still; only the sounds of leaves rustled in the quiet. The hair on the back of my neck prickled.
“Ester, you were warned.” Gavin’s voice became soft, menacing.
Her eyes snapped to him, and I gasped.
I’d grown used to the unusual irises of the Alfar. Gavin’s eyes were like faceted emeralds; his mother’s were the texture of smooth lavender opals. But these … these weren’t the jeweled tone that held essence. These looked as if they were made of solid gold. They held no depth, no expression.
They weren’t natural.
