My buddy Haley over at Ya-Aholic has started a new meme about books that we still think about. There are so many books that have affected me through the years that I couldn't resist participating!
Here's one of my favorite series of all time. I first read them in college, and my original copies were so worn half the pages were held together with tape. :-)
It's Stephen R. Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. My first foray into fantasy was Tolkein's Lord of the Ring series. I read them in high school, and while I loved the storyline it didn't speak to me like this series did. The world Donaldson creates seemed so real to me that I started looking at our world differently. It was the reason I became aware of the importance of environmental issues, and honestly is probably why I choose to write fantasy. To my knowledge, Donaldson hasn't written anything in years, but there is a rumor afoot that he is planning to write the final book of Covenant's life. When he does, I'll be first in line to pre-order it!
