Here's the back of the book blurb:
In an alternate 19th century, there are two warring continents on an reimagined earth: the scientific Anglica (England) and magical Bharata (India). Emboldened by her grandfather’s final whispered secret of a magical lotus, Tori Harding, a young Victorian woman and aspiring botanist, must journey to Bharata, with its magics, intrigues and ghosts, to claim her fate. There she will face a choice between two suitors and two irreconcilable realms.
In a magic-infused world of silver tigers, demon birds and enduring gods, as a great native mutiny sweeps over the continent, Tori will find the thing she most desires, less perfect than she had hoped and stranger than she could have dreamed.
Review:
You can tell Kay is a veteran writer by the way she develops this story. Too, the writing is clear, the plot well developed, and the characters unique and complex. The complexities of both worlds are interwoven in a way that keeps the intrigue and pages turning!
At the heart of the book is a kind of science versus spirituality. The protag, Astoria Harding, is an apprentice botanist. She suddenly finds that she must leave her homeland of Anglica and go to Bharata, a spiritual place full of things she's never known. The trip there is full of mystery, magic, and a little romance to boot. :-)

Sorry I missed the give away, this sounds great - I'll add it to my wishlist! I've just started reading Fantasy this year really and it's been a great journey so far. I love your review of this one - unique and complex characters are on my 'love' list as are elements if romance (not enough to overwhelm the plot in a Fantasy novel, but enough to keep my inner romantic hooked!). :-)
