Rewiring Education

Some say that the children aren't as focused as they used to be, but I beg to differ. They are focused ... just in a different way. As a teacher I've seen a tremendous change in children. The kiddo's are now bringing an entire new skill set with them when they come to school. Even though we have seen a rise in foundational reading, writing, and math skills, I'm talking about the children's inherent understanding of technology.

And it's changing the way we teach.

No longer will kiddo's tolerate a traditional classroom with books, pencils, and the occasional crayon. They've bypassed that level by the age of three. In order to keep these children actively engaged, teachers must use technology in an interactive way. School systems are struggling to purchase ipads, computers, laptop labs, smart boards, and teachers are demanding professional development on interactive classroom performance systems, green screens, flip cameras, podcasts, and class blogs ... the list goes on and on.

While we play catch up to the learning curve, parents are keeping their children ahead of the game by purchasing the latest gadgets. If you don't know what I mean, check out this two year old with an ipad.

Yep. Things are sure getting interesting around here!

  1. I agree that this is where education needs to head. It's a shame with all the state testing and politics and stupid drama that the kids miss out on getting what they need.
